How to Reach Tirupati & Tirumala
Tirupati is well connected by air, rail, and road. Once in Tirupati, Tirumala (the hill temple) is just 22 km uphill.

Tirupati Airport (TIR) — Renigunta Airport
Tirupati Airport is located about 15 km from Tirupati city center at Renigunta. It has daily flights from major cities including Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, and Visakhapatnam. Airlines operating include IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Air India.
Pre-paid taxis and APSRTC buses are available from the airport. Taxis to Tirupati cost approximately INR 400-600, and to Tirumala (foot of the hill) around INR 800-1200.

Tirupati Railway Station (TPTY)
Tirupati has an important railway junction connected to most major cities in India. There are direct trains from Chennai (3 hr), Bangalore (6 hr), Hyderabad (12 hr), Delhi (28 hr), Mumbai (22 hr), Kolkata (30 hr), and many other cities.

Book train tickets in advance via IRCTC (irctc.co.in). Tatkal tickets open one day before for emergency bookings. Renigunta Junction (RU) is the nearest major junction, 10 km from Tirupati.

APSRTC & Private Bus Services
APSRTC (Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation) operates frequent bus services to Tirupati from all major cities in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. Private operators like VRL, Orange, and SRS also run services.
APSRTC Services
- Bangalore: 6-7 hours (frequent Volvo/AC services)
- Chennai: 3-4 hours (every 30 minutes)
- Hyderabad: 10-12 hours (overnight sleeper)
- Vijayawada: 6-7 hours (regular services)
Tirupati to Tirumala
- APSRTC buses run 24/7 from Tirupati bus stand
- Frequency: Every 5-10 minutes
- Journey time: 45 minutes to 1 hour
- Fare: INR 75-120 (varies by bus type)
The Tirupati to Tirumala ghat road has strict traffic regulations. Only APSRTC buses and authorized vehicles are allowed. Private vehicles need a special pass obtained from the RTC bus stand.
🚗By Car from Major Cities
From Bangalore (Bengaluru)
Take NH44 via Kolar and Chittoor. Well-maintained highway with multiple toll plazas. Food stops available at Kolar and Chittoor.
From Chennai
Take NH48 via Sriperumbudur and Kanchipuram, then NH71 to Tirupati. Alternatively, take the ECR to Ponneri and join NH16 southward.
From Hyderabad
Take NH44 (via Kurnool and Kadapa) or NH65 (via Vijayawada). The Kurnool route is shorter but the Vijayawada route has better road conditions.
From Vijayawada
Take NH16 to Nellore, then NH71 to Tirupati. Comfortable highway with good road conditions throughout.
From Coimbatore
Take NH544 to Salem, then NH46 to Vellore, and continue on NH71 via Chittor to Tirupati.
From Pune
Take NH48 to Bangalore, then continue on NH44 to Tirupati. Best done as a two-day drive with an overnight stop in Bangalore.
